Writing came naturally to Suziette.
I started writing poetry when I was 9 years old. So it was no wonder I dived into short stories at 13years. 10-15 years later, I was writing scripts for stage productions, stories for social media handles and copies for advertising.
My name is Suziette, a lot of my friends’ call me Sue and my family, Sush. I have been writing all my years but for pay, I started writing in 2008; when I trained as a copywriter with TBWA/Concept, Nigeria.
For over 10 years now, I have been writing for international brands with various agencies like TBWA/Concept, BatesCosse, Insight Communications, Yellow Brick Road, Azzagai aka FKG2, DDB, BBDO, Neo Media, Bluebird Communications and others as a full-time employee and as a freelance.
On the client side, I first worked with an FMCG Company called Charvet Nigeria Limited as the Business Development Manager for Kissmix however; I was tasked with handling events for all the brands in the company. One such brand is the Power Horse energy drink. Then in 2017, I was invited to work with the communication group at Sterling Bank, a financial institution that was gaining an edge in the financial industry in Nigeria.
I have lived all my years in Lagos as I was born in Apapa, Lagos. Relocating has not come to mind as Lagos is the hub of advertising and creativity in Nigeria.
My writing skills have been exceptional basically because of my background as a theatre arts graduate and also due to the fact that I was amongst the first few who were born into a home with a computer making it possible to be amongst the first people to be on Social Media in Nigeria. Understanding the platforms and their inherent benefits, I have been doing social media marketing before I knew it was a thing. This has given me an edge against a lot of copywriters in Nigeria.
It also saw me getting recognized early by international agencies like Tag World Wide London through World Writers and as such, helped me diversify into being a transcreation copywriter for them and also for Oliver Marketing, London and presently, Cuttlefish agency, Amsterdam.
It has not been easy being a copywriter in Lagos, Nigeria as the Government has no policy supporting freelancers in our Country. However, it is easy to get some freelance jobs in Lagos if you have worked with some agencies in Lagos and they know you are now freelancing and a good copywriter at that.
Being a copywriter is such a beautiful thing especially if you have clients who respect what you do and believe in your capacity. I have enjoyed working on Glo Nigeria, Stanbic IBTC and am proud of the radio ads I did with them. I mostly enjoy working for my foreign clients; foreign agencies and would really love to relocate to a foreign country to work and feel how it is done outside Nigeria. I basically will love to move to South Africa if I can’t go far to work with an agency there, probably TBWA or to Canada/US and work with any agency.
This is to try out my creativity in a foreign land and to see how good I can be, for they have gone so far and so wild that I feel we are creating child’s play in Nigeria. I so would like to come up with an idea that transcends copywriting.
I have enjoyed creating exceptional ads in Nigeria and presently, enjoying creating content for online media. I love writing so it is no strange thing that I started a blog to promote and change the narrative of an issue in Nigeria; older motherhood
